ABOUT US

Purpose

The Coorong Environmental Trust exists to further the protection, preservation or improvement of the ecology of the Lakes and Coorong Ramsar site.

The trust was first established as a community trust in January 2020 by a group of 9 local people with a genuine desire to protect, preserve and improve the ecology of the Lakes and Coorong Ramsar site. The trust acts as a repository for scientific information and undertakes research to ensure the viable future of these waterways.

Legislation was introduced in the South Australian Legislative Council as a Private Members Bill by the Honourable Tammy Franks MLC in April 2019. The Coorong Environmental Trust Act 2021 (the Act) came into operation on the 9 March 2022.

Pursuant to the Act the Minister for Climate, Environment and Water will appoint the initial members of the legislated Trust. Trust members will then appoint a Board of Management consisting of 7 persons, including two appointed by the Minister.

The Minister is currently considering the process of appointing the initial trust members.  In the meantime, the community trust will continue to operate pursuant to the Trust Deed.
